Every month we will bring you easy 'cheat sheets' on how to get the latest looks for your home. With tips and advice on how the professionals pull together those gorgeous looks you see in all the great home and lifestyle magazines.
For March, getting ready for Spring, it's all about working with yellows. We've seen lots of yellow in the shops and inspired by a recent trip to the shops we've pulled together some great yellow looks for every room in the house.
Yellow isn't as easy as it seems, if you don't get it right it can look very flat and a little acidic. So here are some tips for working yellow into your living room.
Let's first talk paint. You do need to work a palette first before you consider anything. Now grey is a perfect partner for yellow. We love to use the Seeds palettes to start off with, you will get so much inspiration from their colour palettes, so we recommend starting there http://design-seeds.com/
What do we mean by 'pick 2 tones'? For this scheme we have worked around a saffron coloured yellow and you could do 1 of 2 things.
1. Pick a grey background for walls and large pieces of furniture, like your sofa and accessories with yellow accents. So pick a darker grey for walls and lighter grey for sofas. If you are worried about working with darker colours, check out our previous looks here
2. Pick the saffron colour as your wall colour and then use as many tones of grey as you can, even going up to the darkest charcoal, trust me dark charcoal adds a great sense of depth.
So you've picked your background colour palette, now lets talk accessories.
Here is the ONLY tip you need when picking accessories for a new colour scheme.
Add white & add black accents. So whether that's a white cushion or a black lampshade, you need that contrast. White will freshen everything up and make it look clean, in this yellow colour scheme it will make the yellow colour really ping! The black accents add depth.
Steer clear of yellow & blue! You don't want to look like the outside an Ikea!
The last tip for any room is to add greenery, lots of it. So if you are doing up your living room before you sell and don't want the expense of real flowers (because let's face it, we aren't all Elton John) there are some amazing faux flowers already arranged available online. You can take them with you when you move!
